Use the same pickup and return location, dates, clock times, residency, driver age, vehicle class, and mileage requirement. A “midsize or similar” quote should be compared with the equivalent class, not a specific pictured model. If one quote is airport pickup and the other is a neighborhood branch, they are different products with different convenience and charge structures.

Then decide whether you are comparing pay-later with pay-later or prepaid with prepaid. Enterprise's US cancellation FAQ says non-prepaid reservations booked through its North American site and app have no cancellation fee, while prepaid reservations have stated cancellation deductions. Hertz says cancellation and no-show charges are the amounts shown in the booking process and confirmation. The exact rate terms, not the logo, should decide how much flexibility you are buying.

Save both review screens. A base daily rate is not enough: taxes and airport-related charges can materially change the amount, and some usage costs cannot be known until the rental ends.

Driver age and additional drivers

Enter the primary driver's real age before comparing. Hertz's US young-renter page says its usual minimum is 20 at most US locations, with lower minimums in several named states. Enterprise says its general US minimum is 21, with exceptions in Michigan and New York, and that renters under 25 pay a location-dependent young-renter charge. Vehicle access can also be narrower for younger renters.

For a second driver, do not merely add a name to your spreadsheet. Check whether that person must appear at pickup, meet the same license and age requirements, and pay a daily charge. Membership, corporate, government, or other contractual terms may change the rule. Quote the actual travelers rather than importing a fee from another airport or state.

Separate cost from the temporary hold

The amount authorized at pickup can exceed the estimated rental charge. It is not the same as a fee if released, but it matters to available credit and to a debit-card travel budget. Enterprise publishes US deposit and payment FAQs while also directing renters to location-specific requirements. Hertz's payment and rental terms likewise depend on the booked location and rate.

Before choosing, call the exact branch if the online terms do not state the hold, accepted card, debit-card restrictions, identification requirements, or release timing. This is especially important when funds are tight or the reservation begins outside counter hours.

Price fuel, tolls, and timing

Use the same fuel assumption in both columns. Returning at the received level usually keeps the comparison under your control; prepaying can trade convenience for unused fuel, while a refueling service can carry a different per-unit price. Record the selected policy, not just “fuel included.”

Tolls are also route-dependent. Estimate road tolls separately, then add any transponder, service, or administrative charge shown for the booked region. Charges can arrive after the rental when a toll authority reports them.

Clock time matters. A return later than the booked time may create another rental period or late charge, while an after-hours return can leave responsibility with the renter until the branch processes the vehicle under its terms. Match times exactly and read the branch hours.

Add options intentionally

Compare protection only after checking what you already have through personal auto insurance or a payment card; coverage and exclusions vary, so this is not a recommendation to accept or decline it. Add child seats, satellite radio, roadside products, or an EV charging service only if the traveler will buy them. A “cheaper” quote with required options omitted is not cheaper.
