How cashback works.

Start at ShopBack, click through to a participating merchant, and complete the purchase. A percentage of the sale comes back as cashback that is withdrawable to a bank account or PayPal.

Where does cashback money come from?

Merchants pay ShopBack a commission for referring shoppers who buy. ShopBack shares part of that commission with the shopper as cashback. The shopper pays nothing to use ShopBack, and the price at the merchant is the same either way.

How do you earn cashback, step by step?

  1. 1

    Start at ShopBack

Open the ShopBack app, site, or browser extension and find the merchant. The store page shows the current cashback rate and any exclusions.

  2. 2

    Click through to the merchant

Tap the activation link. This starts a tracked shopping trip that tells the merchant the visit came from ShopBack.

  3. 3

Shop and check out as normal

Complete the purchase in the same session without visiting other coupon or referral sites in between. Pay however the merchant accepts.

  4. 4

    Watch the purchase track

The order appears in the ShopBack account as tracked cashback with a pending status, usually within 48 hours.

  5. 5

    Wait for confirmation

Once the merchant return window closes and the order is verified as final, pending cashback becomes confirmed. Retail orders typically confirm within 30 to 90 days; travel confirms after the trip.

  6. 6

    Withdraw the cash

Confirmed cashback becomes withdrawable. Transfer it to a linked bank account or PayPal whenever it suits.

Which tracking rules actually matter?

Tracking connects a purchase to a ShopBack account, and it is where most missed cashback happens. The rules are simple:

  • Activate first, buy second. The click from ShopBack (the activation) has to happen before checkout. Adding items to a cart first is fine, but the final click-through must come from ShopBack.
  • Stay in the session. Visiting another coupon or referral site between activation and checkout can hand the referral to that site instead. Reactivate through ShopBack if the session breaks.
  • Use codes ShopBack surfaces. Promo codes found elsewhere can carry their own affiliate attribution and break tracking. Codes shown on ShopBack or applied by the browser extension stack safely with cashback.
  • Mind the exclusions. Gift cards, sales tax, and shipping are commonly excluded from the qualifying amount. Each merchant page lists its exclusions.
  • Check within 48 hours. Most orders appear as tracked within 48 hours. If one does not, file a missing cashback claim with the order details.

What do pending, confirmed, and withdrawable mean?

Every tracked purchase moves through three states:

  1. Pending. The order tracked, and the merchant return window is still open. The amount can change if items are returned or the order is adjusted.
  2. Confirmed. The merchant verified the order as final and paid the commission. The amount is now fixed. Retail orders typically confirm within 30 to 90 days; travel bookings confirm after the trip is completed.
  3. Withdrawable. The cash is available to transfer to a linked bank account or PayPal. There is no deadline to withdraw.

Frequently asked questions

How does ShopBack make money if it pays me cashback?

Merchants pay ShopBack a commission for referring shoppers who complete a purchase. ShopBack shares part of that commission with the shopper as cashback. Shoppers never pay to use ShopBack.

Why is my cashback pending instead of paid immediately?

Cashback stays pending while the merchant return and cancellation window is open. If the order is returned or changed, the cashback amount adjusts to match. Once the merchant verifies the order is final, the cashback is confirmed and then becomes withdrawable.

How long does cashback take to confirm?

It depends on the merchant. Most retail orders confirm within 30 to 90 days after purchase. Travel bookings confirm after the stay or trip is completed. Each merchant page on shopback.com shows an estimated timeline.

What if my purchase did not track?

If a qualifying purchase has not appeared as tracked within 48 hours, file a missing cashback claim from the account with the order number, date, and amount. Common causes are another coupon site claiming the referral after activation, excluded items, or browser tracking protection.

Does cashback stack with promo codes and sales?

Yes. Cashback is calculated on the amount actually paid, so it applies on top of sale prices and most promo codes. Codes from outside ShopBack can sometimes break tracking, so codes surfaced by ShopBack or its browser extension are the safe choice.

Is cashback real money or points?

Real money. Withdrawable cashback transfers to a linked bank account or PayPal. It does not convert to points or store credit unless the shopper chooses a gift card option.
