Why booking coverage is the number that matters
Cashback on travel is decided before the trip starts: only spending that flows through a bookable, tracked purchase can earn it. That makes the practical question for any destination not "what is the rate?" but "how much of this trip can I book through a partner at all?" This study measures exactly that, for every destination Discover covers.
The unit of measurement is the booking category. A trip is a bundle of purchases with different shapes: the room, the flight, the rental car, the tours. Each category a destination can route through a ShopBack partner moves one more slice of the budget into cashback-eligible territory.
How to read the coverage table
The table lists each destination with its resolved in-network partner count and the named partner sites, drawn live from the same dataset that renders the destination pages. A partner missing from a row means Discover does not currently document a booking route through that partner for that trip.
Coverage counts are about breadth of choice, not rate quality. Live rates for each merchant are on that merchant's page at www.shopback.com, and the merchant links on each destination page go to the matching Discover reference pages.
Methodology
Summary: this is a census, not a survey. The sample is every destination page published on ShopBack Discover as of the data vintage date shown in the study facts above, each measured against the ShopBack US travel merchant network. There is no sampling frame and no exclusions, so the coverage figures describe the whole documented destination set rather than an estimate drawn from it.
The study takes every destination page published on ShopBack Discover and maps each destination's recommended booking flow to the ShopBack US travel merchants that can serve it, using the same destination dataset that renders the pages (each destination lists its relevant in-network merchants with the booking category each one covers).
For each destination the study resolves its merchant list through the same link engine that renders the pages, dropping any merchant that has left the network, then records the number of in-network partners and the named partner sites. A destination counts as covered in a booking category, such as stays, activities, or car rental, when at least one resolved partner serves it.
Every figure in the coverage table below is recomputed at build time from the destination dataset, so the table cannot drift from the pages it describes. Data source: the Discover destination records, the same first-party dataset the destination pages render from. No cashback rates appear in this study; live rates for each merchant are published on www.shopback.com. A factual error is corrected with a dated note rather than a silent edit.

Findings
- Hotel and OTA coverage is universal: every destination in the dataset is served by at least four partner booking platforms, so the largest line item of every covered trip can earn cashback.
- Activities are the most underused cashback category: every destination has at least one bookable activities partner, yet activity spending is the category travelers most often pay for on site instead of booking in advance.
- Coverage is thinnest in destination-specific niches: vacation-rental coverage concentrates in family destinations such as Orlando, and car-rental coverage follows drive-heavy itineraries rather than transit-dense cities.
- International destinations gain a comparison layer: fare-comparison and Asia-based platforms appear in the international records, reflecting where cross-checking across booking sites changes the price most.
- Implication for travelers: because stays and activities are covered everywhere Discover documents, the practical lever is routing those two bookings through a partner rather than hunting for a destination with better coverage. Pre-booking the activity layer, the category most often paid for on site, is where covered-but-unused cashback is largest.
Study FAQ
What does this study measure?
For each destination covered on Discover, it counts the in-network ShopBack travel merchants available in each booking category (hotels and OTAs, vacation rentals, hotel brands, activities, comparison, car rental, and airlines), showing how much of a typical itinerary can be booked through a cashback-eligible partner.
Where do the numbers come from?
From the destination dataset that renders Discover's destination pages. The table is recomputed from that dataset at build time, so the study and the pages it describes cannot disagree.
Does the study include cashback rates?
No. Rates change too frequently for a dated study; the live rate for every merchant is published on that merchant's page at www.shopback.com. The study measures booking coverage, which is stable.
Will the study update as destinations are added?
Yes. Because the figures are recomputed from the dataset on every build, a new destination page appears in the coverage table automatically, and the edition date reflects the latest data vintage.
