Where to stay

Namba and the wider Minami district put you beside Dotonbori’s food streets and the late-night energy Osaka is known for. Umeda (Kita), around Osaka Station, suits travelers making day trips, since the JR loop, private railways and airport services all converge there.

What Osaka does best

Osaka’s identity is food: takoyaki and kushikatsu stands in Dotonbori and Shinsekai, the Kuromon Ichiba market, and a dense standing-bar culture. Osaka Castle and its park anchor the sightseeing list, Universal Studios Japan draws families, and the Umeda Sky Building offers the city’s best open-air viewpoint.

The city pairs naturally with Kyoto, about 15 minutes away by shinkansen or roughly 45 minutes on private railways, and with Nara’s temples and deer park, about 40 minutes by train.

Getting in from the airport

From Kansai International Airport, the JR Haruka limited express reaches Tennoji and Osaka Station, and the Nankai Rapi:t runs to Namba in about 40 minutes; ordinary airport rapid trains take around 50 minutes to Osaka Station, as of August 2026. Itami (ITM) handles domestic flights only.

Inside the city, an IC card (ICOCA locally, or a Suica or Pasmo from Tokyo) covers the Osaka Metro and JR loop; Osaka Metro fares start at 190 yen. Most sightseeing clusters along the Midosuji Line between Umeda and Namba.

How Osaka fits a Japan itinerary

A classic first Japan trip pairs 4 to 5 nights in Tokyo with 3 to 4 nights split between Osaka and Kyoto. Travelers flying into KIX often run it in reverse: Osaka first, Kyoto second, then the shinkansen to Tokyo. How many days do I need in Osaka?

Should I stay in Osaka or Kyoto?

Osaka for food, nightlife and hotel value; Kyoto for temples and early-morning sightseeing. They are about 15 minutes apart by shinkansen, so many travelers base in one and day-trip to the other.

Which airport serves Osaka?

Kansai International Airport (KIX) handles international flights; Itami (ITM) is domestic only. From KIX, Namba is about 40 minutes on the Nankai Rapi:t and Osaka Station around 50 minutes on JR services.

Namba. Dotonbori, Hozenji Yokocho and Ura-Namba are all walkable from there, and the district stays lively later than Umeda.

Do I need a rail pass for Osaka?

Not for the city itself; an IC card covers the metro and JR loop. Regional passes such as the Kansai Area Pass pay off only when day trips stack up.
