When a purchase does not track, the cause is almost always one of four things: another site claimed the referral, the activation did not register, the items were excluded, or your browser blocked the tracking. Work through them in that order, because the first two account for most cases.
Did another coupon site claim your referral?
This is the most common cause. If you searched for a promo code after activating and clicked into another coupon site, that click replaced ShopBack as the referrer, and the merchant credited the sale there. The fix for next time: use codes surfaced by ShopBack, and if you do visit another site mid-purchase, click through ShopBack again before paying.
Did the activation actually register?
An activation only counts if the click carried you from ShopBack to the merchant in the same session you bought in. Switching devices, letting the cart sit overnight, or completing the order in a different browser all orphan the purchase. Re-activate right before checkout when a session has been interrupted.
Were the items excluded from cashback?
Every merchant sets exclusions. Gift cards, sales tax, shipping, certain brands or categories, and orders paid partly with store credit or points are commonly excluded, so an order made up of excluded items tracks at zero even with a perfect activation. Exclusions are listed on each merchant’s page at shopback.com, and checking them before checkout takes seconds.
Did your browser block the tracking?
Aggressive ad blockers, tracking protection, VPN privacy modes, and private browsing windows can strip the referral information before it reaches the merchant. Pause these tools for the shopping session, or use the ShopBack app, where tracking is built into the flow.
What should you do right now?
If 48 hours have passed since a qualifying purchase, file a missing cashback claim from your ShopBack account with the order number, date, and amount. Claims are investigated with the merchant, and purchases with a clean activation history usually get credited.
Quick answers
How long should I wait before worrying?
48 hours. Most purchases appear as tracked within minutes to a few hours, but some merchants report slowly. If a qualifying purchase has not appeared after 48 hours, file a missing cashback claim.
What do I need to file a missing cashback claim?
The order number, order date, and order amount from the merchant's confirmation email. File the claim from your ShopBack account, and ShopBack raises it with the merchant for investigation.
Will I definitely get the cashback after a claim?
Not always. If the merchant's records show another partner was credited with the referral, or the items were excluded from cashback, the claim can be declined. Claims for purchases with a clean activation and no outside codes usually succeed.
